Canada—A Human and Friendly Giant
by Yvonne VAVROVÁ, director, screenwriter, producer and camerawomanCanadian Impressions, I Lived on a Street, Saved Eyes—these are the names of some the documentaries which I filmed in the Rocky Mountains, Calgary, Ottawa and Toronto during my several trips to Canada. To describe the essence of a country in one or two films is more or less impossible. Who or what represents Canada to me the most?
The deep and ferocious Rocky Mountains, with free-roaming grizzly bears and gigantic moose; the multicultural city of Toronto; the wild Stampedes in Calgary; the black-haired Aboriginals, whom I encountered in two fundamentally different forms—those beautifully dressed in powwows and those lying on the sidewalk—or community sales events, so called garage sales, which every weekend unite neighbours and remove barriers between strangers? The driver of a local bus line who suddenly stepped on the brakes on a highway because a hedgehog was crossing his way? Or is it that beautiful flag that reminds tourists that they find themselves in a land that honours nature? The national anthem that touches your heart (and you don’t even have to be a spectator or a fan of a Canadian sports team)? Or is it the pleasure that you feel when you have a chance to talk, using their mother tongue, with the many Slovaks and Czechs who strive to pass long gone customs from generation to generation, and conserve community activities, although they are not always “in”.
Canada is a diagnosis. It is a chronic longing to be part of the special interconnection of nations, nationalities, national minorities, creeds and ethnic groups which continuously strive to remain independent, multicultural and environmentally clean, all the while protecting nature. Canada is a giant that takes you aback when it transforms into a human and friendly one. When in a cold and remote mountain valley, you find a tidy wooden bench, where someone has thoughtfully piled freshly cut wood nearby so that tired tourists can warm themselves near a fire and relax for a while. Canada is also a squirrel that persistently pleads for a nut from the passers-by along Lake Louise.
For me, Canada has become a land that has its own “character” and its own unmistakeable identity. Canada possesses something that itches filmmakers to keep returning and trying to capture its diversity and, at the same time, its natural ruggedness.
Canada is a part of the story of my life, and of my film story.

I love this country and I'm appalled at the behaviour and antics of the leaders of the NDP, Liberals and the Bloc Quebecois.
Only six weeks ago, the Canadian people spoke with their voices in an election, and they were very clear that none of these people were a choice to lead this country.
Please establish a special Blog here on your Web site to allow Canadians to speak their mind and give you input as you consider your options and a decision that could represent the future of this wonderful country.
Best regards - a Proud Canadian born in 1954, that is presently very scared and needs reassurance that we are not headed to constitutional disaster.
As stated in so many sites today this colition has the whole of Canada up and on their feet. For many years the standard joke has been that Canadians will just sit on their hands. Not so anymore. Those of us who take our democratic right to vote are appalled that our vote means so little.
I and am postive all Canadians love this country and want only the best for it. I have always stressed to my son and his friends how important it is to vote. Now it seems that I have errored in my judgement. If our votes mean so little how can we expect our youth to learn by example and participate in the democratic policies if they are meaningless.
Please veto this movement by the opposition parties and give them time to cool down.
This is not the time to tear our country apart.
I fear that if this goes through without the Canadian People's say that a devision will hit our country that cannot be healed.
Please help your people
the coalition between the Liberals, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois, is an insult to our democratic process. This coalition does not deserve the right to govern. The liberal support is declining and even members of the liberal party don't want Dion as their leader. If the liberals want more support, why not go get more votes from their own constituents instead of looking to seperatists for support. Few people want Layton to be prime minister and his policies of supporting unions are what got the automanufacturers in such trouble today. The Bloc Quebecois shouldn't even be allowed to run in a federal election unless they run candidates all across our country. No one in the entire country wants Ducepe to be priminister of Canada. they either don't want him or they want him to be prime minister of Quebec. A coalition of any group that seeks the support of a seperatist party should not be given the privilidge to govern. No one in this country voted for this desperate concoction of a coalition in the last election and I doubt many would support it now. At least give Canadians the chance to vote, that is our right! The people of Canada have not given their concent to be governed by this coalition. Please don't give them power they have not earned.
In concert with the comments expressed by the Proud Canadian1954, I too hope that you will establish a special blog on your website so that Canadians can express their thoughts regarding the current situation in Parliament.
It would seem that a group of individuals are attempting to steal the Country, and ignore the will and votes of the people. In many parts of this nation there are millions of frightend people who thought that this sort of treachery could never occur.
The Canadian people spoke during the recent election and their will must be considered as law. This attempt to steal this country from the people should and must be stopped, and I (along with many Canadians) hope you will not allow this treachery to occur!
Many of us feel that you are the only indidividual that has the power to protect this country in this time of crisis. I plead that you will not allow this to happen, and if not then our vote is meaningless, and our country will be lost.
I hope you can help, and do everything in your power to protect our rights and our country.
Regards,
Jan

With the turmoil in the world at this time Harper's request to prorogue parliament is simply an act of attempting to salvage his job. He allowed the opportunity for the coalition to come about and he will have to abide by the election results. Canada did not grant him a marjority so he should stop behaving like ha has one.
I look forward to a period of hard work in our chambers.

Sharon
I am adding my voice to the other Canadians who are appalled with the current attempt by the Coalition of Liberals, NDP and Bloc politicians to take over the government.
The Canadian people elected the current government and politicians who could not be elected to a majority by standard methods must not be allowed now to govern. Certainly not a party whose main aim is to destroy Canada as it is now.
Our Fallen Soldiers must be turning over in their graves to see what their ultimate sacrifice has led to.

Marilyn
